Male Survivors
Millions of males of all ages and backgrounds experience domestic violence and sexual assault every year
When we talk about domestic violence and sexual assault, the experiences of men and boys are often overlooked. Yet millions of males of all ages and backgrounds experience these forms of violence every year. Acknowledging male survivors — and offering compassionate support — is essential for healing, justice, and prevention.
Domestic violence is not limited by gender. Men can be victims of abuse from female or male partners in both heterosexual and same-sex relationships.
Forms of Abuse Men May Experience:
- Physical violence (hitting, kicking, choking)
- Emotional abuse (insults, threats, manipulation)
- Financial control (stealing money, restricting access to work or bank accounts)
- Coercive control (isolating from friends/family, monitoring activities)
- Sexual violence (Unwanted touching, rape, forced penetration)
Barriers to Seeking Help:
- Social stigma: Many men fear being disbelieved or ridiculed
- Cultural expectations: Ideas about masculinity can make it harder for men to admit victimization
- Lack of resources: Fewer shelters, hotlines, or services are designed with male survivors in mind
- Legal concerns: Some men fear they will not be taken seriously by authorities
!! REALITY CHECK !!
Abuse is never a reflection of a man’s strength or worth. Every person — regardless of gender — deserves safety and respect in their relationships.
Important to Know:
Male survivors often delay disclosure for years. Healing is possible at any time, and seeking help is a sign of courage, not weakness.
If you are a male survivor of abuse, sexual assault, or trafficking:
- You are not alone. Many other men have experienced similar harm and have found pathways to healing.
- You deserve support. There are confidential, judgment-free services available to help you.
- Seeking help is a sign of strength. Speaking up about abuse takes tremendous courage and resilience.
If you know a male survivor:
- Believe them without judgment.
- Offer support and listen without trying to “fix” their feelings.
- Encourage them to seek professional help if they are ready.
Violence against men and boys is real — and so is their strength in surviving it.
By challenging harmful myths, offering inclusive services, and creating safe spaces for all survivors, we can build a world where healing and justice are possible for everyone, regardless of gender.
